Paris, Club du Livre, Philippe Lebaud, 1977

Printed cloth slipcase, 2 volumes of 285x285mm. The facsimile consists of 39 square leaves (27x27cm) bound in accordion, 36 are drawn recto-verso for a total length of nearly 11m and 2 cork plates for cardboard. The second volume is a 4to paperback of explanatory documents.

Produced in 1200 copies, here No. 218

The Borgia codex, made of animal skin and named after one of its former owners from the 18th century Stephano Borgia is a pre-Columbian pictorial manuscript from Central America (central Mexico) with calendar and ritual content, dating from the 16th century. The manuscript now belongs to the Vatican Library (since Stephano Borgia).

This facsimile reproduces the codex exactly in its format, its colors, its defects and wear with 2 cork plates as beginning and end. The publisher chose a kind of waxed and solid canvas to print and bind the leaves giving the whole a disjointed appearance but faithful to the manuscript as it must be today. This is the last facsimile of the Borgia codex. Produced for the general public 48 years ago.
