Histoire du Royaume de Coqueterie

An extremely rare reissue of Histoire du temps, ou Relation du royaume de Coqueterie, first published in 1654, not listed in any library catalog according to WorldCat.

The story begins with the narrator recounting his shipwreck with his companions on an island off the coast of Africa that had not yet been discovered and was not included on any maritime chart. Like Thomas Moore, who used the island to describe his Utopia, François Hedelin here uses the metaphor of an island to construct a bitter and mischievous portrait of 16th-century French society.

The very structure of the island serves to address various themes:

[...] à l’orient de l’île, sont deux châteaux célèbres, oisiveté et libertinage [...]

[...] A l'entrée de la Ville Capitale est une place nomée Cajolerie, ouverte de tous costez, & qu'on a renduë spacieuse par la ruine d'un vieux Temple de la Pudeur, qu'autres-fois on y avoit basti. Là se rendent tous les jours, sans y manquer les chucheteurs fieffez, & les Admirateurs des choses mediocres, avec des Idoles animées qui veulent absolument estre encensees à tort ou à droict.  [...]

It's a portrait that critiques the organization of a society, the trends in behavior, in personalities across different social circles. But also human behavior in general. Behavior that's still relevant today. It's always pleasant to see that there's a certain consistency in humankind, across the centuries.

[...] On void aussi des Coquets serieux armez de fer blanc, mais si bien travaillé, qu'ils s'imaginent estre couverts d'aciers bien trempé & à toute espreuve ; aussi se nomment-ils les Esprits forts, encore qu'à la premiere attaque ils se sentent toujours percez, sans resistance.
Ils parlent peu si ce n'est pour faire les Critiques, ils s'estiment beaucoup & ne sont fort peu estimez, ils croyent sçavoir tout ce qu'ils ignorent & font vanité d'ignorer ce qu'ils devroient sçavoir, ils se sont erigez eux-mesmes en Reformateurs Generaux de Coqueterie, sans que personne vueille deferer à leurs ordres, & se sont rendus plus sots & les plus importuns de tous les coquets. [...]

The book is printed by Guillaume Valleyre as the “L'État de Servitude, ou la Misère des Domestiques” the third book in this collection.
The Valleyres were a prominent printing family in Paris in the early 17th century. Based on an article by Rémi Jimenès (https://www.philobiblon.fr/paris-1723-aux-origines-de-la-stereotypie), several testimonies and studies tend to prove that Guillaume-Amable Valleyre, who died in 1737, was the probable introducer of stereotyping in France. In particular, thanks to the study of a stereotypical calendar plate dated 1723 and coming from his workshop.

Stereotyping is a process of industrializing printing which consists of creating a “mold” of the printing composition of each page, making it possible not to monopolize a font for a book but thus to reprint each text at will without having to recompose it.

Eustache Le Noble, former magistrate, attorney general of the kingdom, became a satirical writer, after his first pamphlet settling of scores in prose L’Allée de la Seringue ou les Noyers. Poème héroïque en quatre chants, s.l., 1675, he does it again with this poem in three parts, written after a stay at For l'Évêque.
The author uses Roman mythology to critique his time through Fradin, son of Fradine, sentenced by the court of Minos to have his nails clipped.

These mythological images primarily referred to his stay at For l'Évêque. Philippe Hourcade wrote about this:

[...] cela tenait de la chronique judiciaire et narrait les méfaits, puis le châtiment d’un geôlier dur et rapace, conforme en tous points à l’idée qu’on se faisait alors de toute sa profession. Le For l’Évêque y revêtait les aspects d’un décor d’Enfer vaudevillesque, et la punition finale, lisiblement symbolique dans sa procédure adoucie, consistait à couper les ongles trop longs du coupable.

And to finish with a description of the author's style:
[...] Cette façon de ranger les rieurs de son côté, d’abonder dans le sens de l'opinion publique, de monter en épingle un incident dérisoire, répond à ce qu’on nomme le style héroï-comique.

L'État de Servitude, ou la Misère des Domestiques

An extremely rare first edition, the second edition, printed in Troye, is more common, for the Bibliothèque Bleue, and has an estimated printing date of around 1750.

A verse text written in the first person, describing the profession of domestic servant, their social status, and the relationship between master and servant.
The author seeks to convey to his contemporaries the life and daily routine of domestic servants, as his own experience has taught him.

Les plus légères sont de se, lever lot et de se coucher tard, de suivre Madame a l'église, d'accompagner Monsieur chez les grands. On s'accommoderait encore de l'humeur de Monsieur, mais comment se faire à celle de Madame?

Ce qui par dessus tout est dur à supporter,
C’est que n'omettant rien pour la bien contenter,
Faisant avec grand soin tout ce qu'elle commande,
Au lieu de vous louer, elle vous réprimande.
En tout elle est d'un goût si fin, si délicat,
Que sur une vétille elle fait de l'éclat.
Qu'elle voye une ordure, elle crie et tempête,
Et vous fait un Situât à vous rompre la tôle.

The second edition, which is more commonly found, is printed in Troyes by Garnier. Having been printed for the Bibliothèque Bleue, Nisard discusses it in his Histoire des livres populaires ou de la littérature du colportage. Paris E. Dentu 1864, Volume 1. He offers an uncompromising analysis of the text, as well as a more personal opinion on the second edition:

These words of advice are good and these remarks excellent; but it is too short, and above all, it is too late. [...] In short, the play contains a great deal of bitterness and mediocre wit. Furthermore, given the current state of our morals, and given the indiscipline and general depravity of servants, it would be dangerous reading.

The copy I used is undated and has 16 pages. The paper, the printing, and the errors it is full of, all give it the right to be called a nightingale, and, as such, to be revered by bibliophiles. In fact, the second edition has an identical text but has been recomposed to fit on 16 pages instead of 24, the text is denser and contains spelling mistakes according to Nisard.

Very rare edition. Only two copies of Valleyre's 1711 edition are referenced in the Library, un à la BNF et un autre à la British Library, St. Pancras.

Very rare dialogue in verse inspired by Cervantes. It occupies pp. 3-20 of the edition; four facetious verses follow : Le Bonheur et le malheur achevez (pp. 21-28), Le Génie des Gascons (pp. 29-44), Le Filou filouté (pp. 45-52) et Les Chasteaux en Espagne (pp. 53-76). The last one, printed following the privilege, does not appear in all copies.

This fictional dialogue between Sancho Panza and Don Quixote centers on the death of Sancho's donkey, and offers an example of how Cervantes' characters were reinterpreted in 18th-century French literature. By blending social satire and literary parody, this collection demonstrates the richness and diversity of poetic forms of the period.

A rare text, referenced in only six libraries worldwide, such as the France National Library, the British Library, Harvard Library and Berckley.
